CVE-2026-17566: Critical OS Command Injection in pgAdmin 4 Import/Export Tool

Overview

CVE-2026-17566 is a CRITICAL-severity OS Command Injection vulnerability (CWE-78) affecting pgAdmin 4, the widely used open-source administration and management tool for PostgreSQL databases. The flaw was published on July 31, 2026, and carries a CVSS 3.1 score of 9.9 — placing it at the very top of the severity scale.

The root cause lies in pgAdmin 4's Import/Export Data tool. When a user invokes this feature, the application constructs a psql \copy (...) command line by interpolating a user-supplied SQL query directly into a Jinja template, which is then passed to the operating system for execution. Because the user-controlled input is not properly sanitized or escaped before being embedded into the shell command, an attacker can break out of the intended query context and inject arbitrary operating system commands.
